Belles Hot Chicken Bottomless Brunch | Darling Square

Bite-sized Summary: Chicken. Waffles. Bottomless Bloody Marys and cocktail jugs. For a smooth $50 this is one of the best value deals around town right now. Grab a bunch of friends and prepare yourselves for two magnificent hours of hot fried chicken and southern-inspired cocktails.Β

Two facts about me:

  1. I’m all about sweet and salty flavour combinations – chips and ice cream, bacon and pancakes, salted caramel, ETC.
  2. Bloody Marys are one of my favourite cocktails! There’s nothing quite like a shot of vodka with tomato juice, hot sauce, and other ingredients which really shouldn’t go together.

Naturally, when I heard about the bottomless brunch at Belles I literally stopped everything to gather a couple of girlfriends and book a table at their Darling Square location.

Located at Steam Mill Lane, Belles is one of the first eateries alongside burger joint 8bit to open. It’s an exciting addition to Sydney’s food scene with the likes of Fishbowl, Marrickville Pork Roll (!!!),Β BangBang, a Shinjuku-inspired whisky, ramen and karaoke bar, and Edition Coffee Roasters soon to come.

Upon arriving for our 1 pm booking on a Saturday afternoon, we were quickly seated at a booth inside and our drink orders taken straight away. For the chicken and waffles, we had the choice of tenders, drumsticks or wings and also heat level – Southern, Medium, Hot, Really Hot and Really F**kin Hot. The waitress recommended hot if you like spicy food as medium isn’t hot at all, so I trusted her judgement and went with that.

Upon first taste of the chicken tenders, I realised ‘Hot’ really wasn’t spicy at all. There is a faint kick which pairs well with the sweet maple syrup however I’d love to try ‘Really Hot’ next time to get more of a chilli flavour. I loved the generous portion of pillow-soft waffles with the juicy fried chicken, which although not too spicy had a crisp and flavoursome coating – yum!

IMG_0368In terms of drinks, I’ve been to a few “bottomless” dining options across Sydney and often I’ve found the cocktails to be watered down or at least not the quality you would expect to receive when paying full price. I’m glad to say that this was not the case at all at Belles! They’ve teamed up with Sydney-based Westmont Pickles to create the perfect blend of vodka, pickle brine, fresh tomato juice and a touch of cayenne pepper. A delicious and rich cocktail with a real spicy kick (more than the chicken!)

For those not keen on Bloody Marys, there were several cocktail jugs on offer, and yes, they bring you the entire jug, so there’s no holding back with this bottomless option. We favoured ‘The Arnaldo’, a cool and refreshing mix ofΒ Tromba Tequila, lemonade and sweet tea. Unfortunately, when ordering our second jug we were informed that they were out of lemonade!! Considering several of their cocktails incorporated lemonade, this was a little disappointing. We were offered the Arnaldo with just tequila and sweet tea and it was very sweet and not our cup of tea.

The Verdict
This Nashville-style feast is the perfect way to kick off the weekend with a bunch of mates (or collectively nurse a hangover). I loved the sweet and savoury chicken and waffles with sweet maple syrup although would have loved more heat, so I’d recommend opting for ‘Really Hot’ or ‘Really F**kin Hot’ if you want a bit of spice.

For every Bloody Mary lover out there, Belles version is a rich, flavourful and delicious tipple with a good kick from the cayenne pepper. The cocktail jugs did not compare for me, however when made properly (including the lemonade, which our second jug did not) it was an easy-drinking and refreshing option.

A wholly satisfying, unpretentious and incredibly affordable experience, Bottomless Brunch is available at Belles from 11:30 am across all of their Sydney and Melbourne restaurants.
