Bite-sized Summary: The ultimate foodie destination for chefs and home cooks alike, Forestway Fresh offers some of the highest quality produce around. In an area where sophisticated cafes are seemingly far and few between, The Tasting Deck offers wholesome meals showcasing the amazing food products available in-store.
Following many years of restauranters embracing the paddock to plate trend, people are increasingly concerned with the quality and origin of food products. Family owned and operated Forestway Fresh has undergone a face-lift to bring northern Sydney some of the finest groceries and food products available on the market!
In addition to fresh produce, which is handpicked by the owners every morning, the gourmet grocer stocks specialty ingredients such as Glacier 51 toothfish, black truffle butter and lasagne arancini balls. This is just one of the reasons why it’s frequented by chefs like Peter Gilmore, Giovanni Pilu and Miguel!
Recently, I was invited to visit Forestway Fresh to experience their quality produce for myself. I chose to explore the variety of products and fresh food available in their supermarket, however, couldn’t resist having some breakfast at their in-store cafe first. With a playground just past the outdoor deck, the cafe seems to be popular amongst young families enjoying a morning coffee whilst keeping the kids entertained.
Ricotta & Buttermilk Hotcake
Today, I felt like something sweet and opted for the ricotta & buttermilk hotcake with flamed meringue, roasted macadamia nuts, blueberry compote and Canadian maple syrup ($21). This was presented beautifully with a gorgeous pillow of torched meringue, filled with berries, roasted nuts and delicate flowers.
Although more of a cake than a hotcake in my opinion due to it’s dense texture, it had a nice crust to it and a lovely, sweet flavour. It was made even sweeter still with a dusting of icing sugar, (sweet) blueberry compote, (even sweeter) meringue and maple syrup (!!). Unfortunately, it was a little too sugary for me, however, not entirely unpleasant. Personally, I would have enjoyed the dish with fresh cream and more fruit instead of the meringue, just to balance out the sweetness a little bit.
My partner chose the Will Studd baked camembert with poached eggs, prosciutto, camembert sauce and baguette ($21), which for the price point he thought was quite small. The camembert sauce itself had a lovely, rich and buttery flavour and I think a lot of cheese lovers would enjoy this! Perhaps it could be made more substantial served as a camembert benedict of sorts with eggs and more prosciutto stacked on toasted bread with the beautiful cheese sauce as a substitute for hollandaise.
Overall, a pleasant breakfast, which I believe did showcase some stunning produce, however, some room for improvement in my opinion regarding portion sizes and balancing flavours; perhaps this is all down to personal preference! If you’re in the area, I’d definitely recommend checking it out for yourself. With a menu including dishes like caramelised pineapple sago with ginger compote, truffled wild mushroom risotto and a sticky maple beef brisket roll, there’s plenty of options to explore!
Shopping where Sydney’s top chefs shop!
This portion is a little different from my normal restaurant reviews, however, I did want to include some information about the shopping portion of my experience at Forestway Fresh for any of my readers who are in the area or looking for those hard-to-find ingredients.
The grocery section of the building is a beautiful, open space filled with natural light, featuring neatly stacked displays of fine food products and vibrant produce (including the shiniest, most perfect apples I’ve ever seen! See photos below). Today, we picked up some cured meats, cheeses and fresh fruit and vegetables, all of which were exceptional in flavour and quality – incredibly different from those available at the large supermarket chains.
Overall, a wonderful shopping experience, albeit on the pricey side, you absolutely get what you’re paying for – the best of the best!
Eats with Marie shopped as a guest of Forestway Fresh. I chose, however, to independently pay for my meal at The Tasting Deck. All opinions, comments and photos are 100% honest and my own.
